Trace Graduates Secundaria!
Well, that is a wrap! Trace has completed "Secundaria". Secundaria, the Mexico system, are grades 7-9. I was figuring this out the other day. Trace spent one year in the public system, 5 years with Escuela del Mundo and now has completed 5 years with Costa Verde. As much as he complains about school he has always been an A student in most subjects and has always contributed positively in class.
Like his sister before him he will be working with the online highs school program called Laurel Springs for 10th grade beginning at the end of the summer. Trace is very independent socially but also likes to run with friends at school so we are not sure how the online program will play out for him. We shall see.
It seems like yesterday we were in the same beautiful location for Trace's graduation from "Primaria" when he completed 6th grade just 3 years ago. Since then so much of the world has had to go to school online or in some cases not even gone to school thanks to COVID. We couldn't have imagined that would have happened to these kids in the last few years. They have endured a lot and it is clear they have come out successfully on the other side of that mess.
Several of Trace's classmates have followed the same path the last 10 years and graduated the same evening so it was bitter sweet to see these families for perhaps the last time in a school setting. From there the graduates will scatter. Some will be online like Trace, some will attend private schools closer to Puerto Vallarta and some will attend "Prepa" the public high school right here in Sayulita. Some may decide on a different path altogether. Such are the way of things when these kids complete 9th grade.
Both of the kids attending online programs next school year will allow for a lot more schedule flexibility. Opportunities to do some of the things we have been waiting to do like really travel will begin to open up as well. As much as Ashley and I loved our HS experience we know that the kids attending online school will help the develop some skills that will carry over into whatever they decide to do after their high school years. Pretty excited to see what the future holds for this family in the next year.

Ashley and Alex Step Out To Support Local Program
Last week Ashley and Alex went to the fundraising event in support of the Centro de Reciclajo de Sayulita. A local non-profit, the Sayulita Recycling Center has been operating for several years doing it's best to reduce waste in town. We are monthly users and supporters of the program and its efforts.
Trashion Fashion has become the annual fundraising event for the Center where recyclable items are transformed creatively into runway worthy designs. Ashley and Alex had this photo taken as they entered the event and it is certainly a keeper.

The Casa PŌNO Studio is Complete!!!
Well, six months after we first broke ground our new rental space is now complete. Just a few more details to take care of but we will be putting the studio out to rent any day now. Between the pace of construction in Mexico, Christmas holiday delays, a sick contractor, visiting friends, lack of motivation and an injured wife the project took a couple months longer than we hoped but we really really like it! We hope you all do as well. Here are some photos!

The Sayulita SUP Open Wraps Up!
The Sayulita SUP Open was held over the weekend and SUP racers from all over Mexico, Hawaii, California, Puerto Rico and Tahiti came to compete. It was fantastic to see a SUP event return to our main beach as racers of all ages battled against waves, wind and each other in a distance race, a technical race and a SUP surfing event.
Friday evening there was a competitors meeting where important information was given out and final lists were made for the weekend. We met some people in the SUP world we knew from the USA and here in Mexico. Alex was also happily reunited with some of her team mates from the CONADE Junior Games from last October. Pretty standard stuff but it was nice to be around SUP folks again and see who the weekend competition would be. We also were able to meet world champion paddler, Conner Baxter, who was super nice and chatted it up with us for a bit.

I might have had a few tequilas before arriving at the meeting and decided that signing up for the races over the weekend would be a great idea......hmmm. So, I handed over the pesos for the entry fee and declared myself a competitor along side the kids. Ashley would have to watch three of us compete over the weekend.
Trace out in front to begin the distance race. |
Saturday morning was the distance race. The course was 10 kilometers long with lots of wind. The women's division was headlined by the women's SUP champion from Argentina, Juliette Du Haime, and she was just plain stronger in the headwind and outdistanced Alex for the win with Alex coming in second.
When Alex came to the finish line the Juniors kids from the SUP Team she coached last year saluted her at the finish line with their paddles raised as she ran beneath them. Such a great gesture from the kids who meant so much to Alex when she was the Jr SUP Team's assistant coach.

Trace, however, paddled beside Juliette for much of the race and finished 7th in the Men's division. Considering the top three finishers were a Men's world champion, the Mexican national champion and a professional waterman from Tahiti Trace's efforts were certainly noticed as a 14 year old and the youngest in the Men's Open Division.

Alex Joins The SIC Maui Jr Development Team
Alex has been racing paddle boards with her brother for about 6 years. What began as an after school activity and social meet up time with friends has turned into something much bigger. We always support our family paddlers. We try to get them what they need to be successful as long as they continue to show that they are serious and dedicated to what they are doing.
The international SUP brand, SIC Maui, is one of the few brands who feature exceptional junior SUP athletes and bring them under their banner. Alex has been paddling on SIC Maui since 2018. This year, Alex put together a string of strong race performances on her SIC Maui race board. The company's brand manager took notice and after some brief discussion with us and Alex an invitation was extended to join the Team.
Several stand out SUP athletes have been part of this youth Team the last few years and have gone on to make their mark in the SUP racing world. Alex and Trace are friends with all these talented juniors and we really like their families as well. Lots of fun to see our daughter be recognized outside of our small Mexico town for her years of effort and dedication. She has the Team, the talent and our full support so let's see where she goes with it.

Sayulita Days Returns!
The highly anticipated yearly carnival made it's return last week for a brief stay after being absent for the last couple years. Certainly a sketchy event but something the kids flock to as soon as the rides start going up on the baseball field in the center of town. Photo by Curt Barter.

Alex's Public Speaking Engagement At Local Fundraising Event
This last week Alex was asked to be a speaker at the annual fundraiser for the Costa Verde International School's student scholarship fund. CVIS is the school that she graduated from almost two years ago and where Trace will graduate from later this year. She was one of two student speakers who presented during the evening. She had done a couple meetings with a school parent to help write and prepare for what ended up being a packed house of several hundred school supporters.
Alex totally knocked it out of the park!! Ashley was filming on one side of the event and I was filming on the other thus the two videos from different perspectives. Almost a week later Ashley and I still receive comments about Alex's speech. She was so comfortable speaking to a large, attentive crowd even with the distractions of dinner being served. Such composure for anyone in front of a crowd like this! Early estimates were that it was a record breaking event for the school! Go Alex!

An SUP Event Returns To Sayulita!!
It has been several years since a SUP event has been organized in Sayulita. This March, SUP competition returns!! The Sayulita SUP Open is the new event that will attempt to rekindle the days of the Punta Sayulita Longboard and SUP Classic but minus the longboard component. The Punta Sayulita Classic was one of our favorite weekends of the year when some of the best paddleboarders were in town with music and great action. This new event is the energy of several local big names in the Mexico SUP world and hopes to draw from not only Mexico but north and south of the border. There will be SUP surf, SUP long distance racing and SUP technical racing.
We will have to wait and see how things work for participation numbers go since COVID still is making travel difficult. The kids are stoked to be racing down the street in their own back yard and we hope to see a number of the kid's friends on the junior sup team participate as well as perhaps some kids from the CONADE Games that Alex went to in October.. No planes, board rentals or hotel reservations for this one! Whatever happens during this SUP event weekend it will be fun to see people come to race, surf and be good hosts to everyone so that this can become a beginning to something that happens every year.

Casa PŌNO Kitchen Upgrade
We have spent the last few years living with a kitchen and dining area done on the cheap. Plywood countertops, a folding card table and repurposed green plastic lawn chairs were very functional though not exactly high style.
Ashley had had enough. It was time for an upgrade and she put something together that would accommodate all the kitchen storage needs and keep things uncluttered and out of sight. Better yet, it would keep things from getting covered in a fine layer of Sayulita dust that accumulates each day and is even worse when we live in a house that is open to the outside during the dry, dusty winter months.
Simple counter height parota table, side table and tall pantry. Chairs coming soon. |
With some inspiration from a friend's home in San Pancho and armed with photos from Pinterest we enlisted the help of our carpenter to build what she envisioned. Lots of adjustable shelves, glass panels and room for close to everything that did not have a daily use in the kitchen. Those daily items would stay on the existing kitchen shelves and be unseen most of the time.
