"It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year"

When school is in I just can't forget that ad that showed the sour faced kids and the parents dancing from aisle to aisle shopping for school supplies. Soon the kids will be busy all day long and the parents will be FREEEEE! Well, I can't remember what store chain put the ad out but it still cracks me up.

Today was Alex and Trace's first day back at school. This year they are attending Escuela del Mundo which is just down the road in San Pancho. It is a Montessori school and they will receive instruction in Spanish 90-95% of the time. It is a non-profit school so they are always looking for outside funding (as well as our tuition payments). The kids are very excited this year and the first day went well. I'm sure we will post tons of stuff about school in the months to come as we settle into a new routine and learn about the community that the kids' new school is a part of.

  1. I'm an avid follower. My wife and I have been going to sayulita since 2005, and before that loved yelepa (still do). We haven't been since we had our girl 2.5 years ago. Could you expand on why you took the kids out of the public school in sayulita? Also if it isn't to personal, approximate tuition for schools similar to their new Montessori? Thanks, and keep the posts coming. You give us hope that maybe an exodus is feasible.

  2. Hola Tienna,
Our son's tuition is about 2500 pesos for his Kindergarden class. It runs from 8-2pm. Our daughter's tuition, for second grade, is a bit higher. Costa Verde would be happy to send you their tuition rates I'm sure. Why not public school this year like last year? We didn't necessarily "take them out" but rather decided on a different course. At Escuela del Mundo the kids would be at the same location all day, same hours. If they were in public school they would have been dropped off in different locations at different times and picked up at different locations at different times. A lot of running around and wouldn't leave time for other things. Esc d Mundo while still almost totally Spanish, has a staff who speaks at least some English as well. While we are trying to progress with our Spanish skills we felt like we missed a lot of the details at the public school because of our language limitations. The communication from Esc d Mundo has been fantastic. I always try to get things done first in Spanish but the ability to communicate in English if needed when it concerns our kids relieves some stress. So, for a very reasonable tuition cost we felt like we had a situation where the kids were in smaller classes, were still together on the same schedule and knew that we could get complete information concerning our kids education. That being said, the women who are in charge of the public Kindergarden on the North side of town were awesome to our kids. They have a really tough job with the number of kids and the facility they have. Our kids, and us as parents, felt like the "Maestras" cared for a treated our kids the same as any kid at their school and always give us a big smile when we see them out front of their school.
