Sayulita Scenes - New Mural

This small cool mural just went up at the former location of the "deposito" at the corner of Calle Revolucion and Calle Jose Mariscol.  It is an intersection that already boasts the fantastic mural that already decorates la Esperanza.  We cannot do much in town without walking by this new addition whether it is on the way to surf, sup practice, shop or go to school.  The building comes to a narrow point and is only about 6-8 feet wide at this end which makes a great size for a creative canvas for a new store going in just behind it.  Next time you walk from the south end to the north end on Calle Revolucion you can't miss it.

Sayulita Scenes - Trace And His "Sayulita Bros"

Trace and his two best friends headed out for a surf trip down the coast a ways via panga yesterday morning.  The panga was captained by Felipe Rodriguez Lorenzo, aka "Pipe", who has been giving the boys SUP surfing instruction this fall.  Pipe finished in the top 10 at the ISA SUP World Championships in Fiji in 2016. Stoked to have another coach for the kids who is also a world class competitor and athlete.  I am going to have to tag along with these groms sometime soon and learn some new things.

Sayulita Scenes - Nik West Cover

Sayulita Scenes - Murals

La Esperanza. The mural outside this restaurant is one reason I love Sayulita.  The bold, fantastic and artistic designs found outside so many businesses create a very cool atmosphere.  I cannot say that we have eaten there in this location but what Jose and Lucy have created in the pueblo has become a steady, year round eatery.

Sayulita Scenes - Road Improvements Continue

With the main entrance to town closed for what seemed like forever, the side streets became the main corridors in and out of town. Calle Pelicanos became the main route in to our pueblo during this time. It is easily the most traveled street after Calle Revolucion for car traffic. It is also the main route for people walking in and out of town, to school etc since it is the mid point between the front and back main entrances to town, runs along the river and is in or near several neighborhoods.

Once the new front entrance to town was mostly complete attention was turned to improving this particular side road.  Like a lot of things here, many things don't happen until they happen and may not even have the input of those being effected by certain projects.  There was actually an informal survey conducted on how this road should operate but whether or not it influenced the final plan is unknown to us.  This road originally had parking for residents on both sides of the street with about 1.5 lanes down the center of the road for traffic.  Not always a convenient route when there is two-way traffic, pedestrians and local resident cars parked on both sides.  I tried to never use this road while driving unless it was early in the morning.

The solution appears to be a one-way road.  Which way it will go is yet to be declared publicly but the assumption is that it will be a one-way exit road from the town center.  It is only about 1.5 cars wide with curbing on both side so there is no room for two way traffic.  There is also no room for resident parking.  Many of the houses on this street were originally designed without cars in mind so over time they were just parked on the road in front of the houses.  This will no longer be the case it appears.  Parking will have to be off the street.  There will also be a real sidewalk for pedestrians to use.  Stamped and colored similar to all the new sidewalks in town.

We will have to see how all this works out once complete.  We wonder how the residents on the street react with no parking and when some of the final details and decisions are made public.  Did they really have any input?  It is great that the street has a safe option for walking and many encourage Sayulita to become more of a walking town.   This is certainly a positive for the project.

Why is this street's transformation of interest?  Well, the street with our new house project may be on the short list for a similar make over.  It carried a heavy load during the entrance construction and becomes almost impassable during the late summer/early fall months when the rains come due to erosion.  We "hear" it's on the list but we have been hearing that for years.  We will wait to see.

Maybe not exactly the intended plan for the street.

Roosters - Neighborhood Sounds

Almost three years ago we move across town from the hill on the north end of town called Nanzal and began renting a place on the south end of town just off the Punta Mita Highway.  We gave up our ocean views and sunsets for next door neighbors, easier commutes to school and work and level walking distance into town.  The North end generally is full of nightly rentals, larger accommodations and less traffic.  The South end is generally more local.  The sites and sounds of life coming from local residents neighborhoods vs  the sounds of life coming from nightly resident neighborhoods is totally different.  One of the biggest differences is what animals you hear.

When you live where we do now you can generally get a good idea what time it is base on whether you can hear the local roosters.  If I get up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom and do not hear any crowing yet then I know it is not 4:30 am just yet and have time to get a couple hours more sleep.  The crowing can be deafening sometimes.  I just attributed it to living in a more local neighborhood where so many roosters and chickens roamed free.  Over the last 6 months or so, several trees have been removed from the neighborhood that we see from our back yard.  I never was able to see any of these buildings before and then suddenly they were there.  One of them is a full fledged Rooster Condominium complex.  I always knew there were roosters and we see them everyday but I had no idea that most of the roosters that I had been hearing for so long actually had accommodations.  Am I surprised?  No, not really.  It just kind of confirms what I may have suspect all along but just couldn't see it.  Sounds like "Home".  The complex pictured is on some appreciating real estate.  I wonder how long the owner will keep it that way.  Times are changing.

Sayulita Scenes - Oz Sayulita?

I was out early this morning and looked up to see this.  The largest project going up on the south end received it's sign this week.  It is called "Oz Sayulita".  Crazy what you see in the morning and you can take the time to look up.  Not really sure how anyone will see the sign from the street level.  I guess we will have to consider a different name for our new casa here.

Sayulita Scenes - The New Boulevard

Welcome to Sayulita!  This will be the welcome visitors receive until mid winter as the main road into town gets a facelift.  We will talk more about this project but this is what things look like as of today and for months to come.

Sayulita Scenes - Hula Hoop Group

All girls, all Spanish, all Hula Hoop.  We found out about this great group organized by a local mom and Alex jumped at the chance to join in.  Armed with her own hoop and her previous experience from Circus class, she absolutely loved getting together with these girls and doing one of her favorite activities.  What a great back yard too!
